| Palms are unique in the plant world and have nutritional needs that are very different from ordinary trees. Proper feeding of the palms is essential for their long-term health and vigor.
All palms should be fed 3x per year, spring, summer and fall using a granular 'palm special' fertilizer. These fertilizers are formulated to meet the special needs of palm trees. The placement of the fertilizer is important. On established palms place the fertilizer in a 4-6 inch band around the palm trunk but stay 2 feet away from the trunk. On newly transplanted palms apply the fertilizer in a 4-6 inch band around the palms where the rootball meets the backfill. On newly transplanted palms use half rates for the first year and skip the first feeding after planting. Remember the rates on the fertilizer bags are for fully established palms.
In areas where the irrigation system is ' drip ', make sure the fertilizer is below the drip line or emitters; where there is overhead spray irrigation, the fertilizer can surface applied.
In addition, I always recommend that all newly planted Canary Island Date palms receive 2 applications of the foliar micronutrient fertilizer product called S.T.E.M. in order to boast their vitality during the establishment period. The first application should be made after the palm heads are untied (30 - 60 days after planting) and the second 45 days later. All the pesticide and foliar fertilizer applications should be done by a professional pesticide applicator. The company I would recommend is Plant-Tek / Jack Olmstead @ 800 779-3337.
Be careful with this material because it can stain hardscapes because of the iron in it. It is best to wash down all hardscape that has any over spray on it immediately after an application.
Palm fertilizer spikes are also an option for long term feeding especially in situations where the palms are located in a turf or lawn situation.
One important thing to bear in mind is that you are feeding for the new growth on the palms- the older fronds that are showing nutrient deficiencies cannot be corrected. Once a granular program is put in place positive results will not be seen for 6 to 12 months. It is important to be patient. The most important thing is to begin the program and then stick with it. MTR Horticulture can do the fertilizer applications for your palms if so desired.
The key is to feed the palms properly on a consistent basis, which will allow them over time to become vigorous and healthy. |
